Sociology

The traditional focuses of sociology include social stratification, social class, social mobility, religion, secularization, law, sexuality and deviance. 

 

As all spheres of human activity are affected by the interplay between social structure and individual agency, sociology has gradually expanded its focus to further subjects, such as health, medical, military and penalinstitutions, the Internet, education, and the role of social activity in the development of scientific knowledge.

 

• Social stratification- a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy.
• a societies catorigation of people into socioeconomic strata based upon their occupation and income.

 In the United States, it is perfectly clear that some groups have greater status, power, and wealth than other groups. These differences are what lead to social stratification. Social stratification is based on four major principles:

1. Social stratification is a trait of society, not simply a reflection of individual differences
2. Social stratification persists over generations
3. Social stratification is universal (it happens everywhere) but it takes different forms across different societies
4. Social stratification involves not just inequality but beliefs as well (inequality is rooted in a society's philosophy)

• Social class- a group of people of similar status, commonly sharing comparable levels of power and wealth.
• Social mobility - the movement if individuals, families, households, or other categories of people within or between social strata in a society.
• Religion-is a system of beliefs and practices related to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forbidden (beliefs and practices which untie into one single moral community).
• Secularization- is a process of social change through which the public influence of religion and religious thinking declines as it is replaced by other ways of explaining reality and regulating social life.
• example: in industrial societies, where secularization has progressed the furthest, science has replaced religion as the primary approach to understanding the natural world while civil law and the state have replaced religion as a source of social control. 
• Law- an approach within legal studies, or a field of research in its own right, it remains intellectually dependent mainly on the traditions, methods and theories of mainstream sociology and, to a lesser extent on the other social sciences
• Sexuality- describes sexual identity, attraction, and experiences which may or may not align with sex and gender.
• this includes but is not limited to heterosexuality, homosexuality (gay or lesbian), bisexuality, queer and so on. (sex and gender don't always align)
• sex- the biological traits that society associates with being male of female
• gender- is the cultural meanings attached to being masculine and feminine; these influence personal identities across a wide spectrum.
• Deviance- describes an action or behavior that violates social norms, including a formally enacted rule, as well as informal violations of social norms.
• committing crimes, rejecting folkways, and more

• Health - studies the interaction between society and health.
• sociologists examine how social life impacts morbidity and how morbidity and mortality rates impact society.
• also looks at health and illness in relation to social institutions such as the family, work, school, and religion as well as the causes of diseases and illness, reasons for seeking particular types of care and patient compliance and noncompliance
• Medical- the sociological analysis of medical organizations and institutions; the production of knowledge and selection of methods, the action and interactions of healthcare professionals, and the social or cultural (rather than clinical or bodily) effects of medical practice.

Texture and balance project

I made a 2D poster for my project using nothing but a pen to show texture and balance. I chose to only use pen because there are many different teniques I could use in order to show texture. Along with that I thought it would help convey the balance throughout the entire project. Through my work I was trying to convey that everything in life has a balance, even if at times it can be difficult to see. 

The research that I did was looking at different texture and balance projects and teniques and sketching any ideas that I had for this project. At the beginning, I looked up ideas to creat this project from Pinterest and Google and began to layout my ideas through sketches. Once I got a specific idea that I thought would work well I took it to ms. Cooper and had it approved. My next step was to gather the materials that I wanted to use (the poster and the two types of pens). Thereafter, I used a pencil to gather the major layout of the final project and began using pen to actually draw the items included in the final. Immediately after I was done with the layout I began adding details. At the end, I got a peer to critique my art to see if there was anything else I needed to include in my project.

This project was theory based. This is beacuse there was no major study choice, I was only focusing on texture and balance. One thing that I like about the project is that we used texture. This is because texture is fun to try to creat in different ways. I liked all the steps that I used to complete this project and I liked using texture and balance, therefore I believe that I wouldn't like to change anything about this project.

Space and motion project

I made a clay tree and covered it with melted crayon to represent space and motion. Along with that to strengthen the idea of seasons changing throughout my project I added painted symbols above the tree. I chose to use clay because I thought it would be different from most other people in the class, and trees have good space I just had to figure out how to add motion to it. Through my work I was trying to communicate that trees have motion without needing anything, and the longer the tree lives the more space it takes up.  

The research I did was looking up different crayon melting techniques, and projects with both space and motion included in them.The first step that I took to creat the project was to look up information, layout my idea, and get the idea approved by ms. Cooper. Next I created the tree with clay and added branches and designs to the tree. After that I began melting different colored crayons onto the clay. Some of the colors that I used are brown, black, white, red, green, yellow, and different shades of blue and orange. Simultaneously, I began creating and painting my seasonal symbols to help convey the seasons. At the end of the project when all the little parts were done I installed my project in the display case in the high school quad.   

This project was theory based because I couldn't find other people doing the exact same thing or things similar, so I just assumed it would work and triedit out. One thing I would change about this project would be that I would extend the time so the project could have more details. However, one thing I really liked about this project is that I got to try something new that I have never tried before. If I would have had more time I would have added more symbols and more detail to the tree.

My semester goal for this year is to be on honor Role. One hung I'm excited for this year is to be one more year closer to graduating and possibly making new friends.
